Where They're Used

Every carton that moves through your facility needs an ID.

A carton label is the barcode identifier applied to a case, box, or carton as it moves through a pick, pack, and ship workflow. Once applied, that label tells your WMS — and everyone downstream — exactly what is in the carton, where it came from, and where it needs to go.

Carton labels are used across warehouses, distribution centers, 3PL operations, e-commerce fulfillment, and manufacturing. Any operation that picks products into cartons and ships them out needs carton labels that scan reliably at every stage.

LabelData produces carton labels from your data file on thermal transfer paper — durable enough to survive handling, transit, and scanning at every touchpoint from pick face to delivery dock.

Picking

Label applied to the carton as product is picked. Scanned to open the carton in the WMS and begin tracking contents.

  • Carton opened in WMS

Packing

Label scanned at the packing station to confirm correct items, quantities, and destination before the carton is sealed.

  • Contents verified

Staging & Outbound

Carton scanned at the staging dock to confirm it is loaded on the correct outbound shipment or pallet.

  • Carton assigned to shipment

Receiving (Destination)

Scanned on arrival at the destination facility to confirm delivery and close the loop in the WMS.

  • Delivery confirmed

Know the Difference

Carton labels vs pallet labels — which do you need?

Both are barcode labels used in warehouse and distribution operations, but they serve different purposes and are applied at different levels of the supply chain.

Carton Labels

Applied to

Individual cases, boxes, and cartons

Tracks

Contents of a single carton through pick, pack, and ship

Typical size

Smaller format — fits on the face of a carton

Used in

Order fulfillment, e-commerce, 3PL, manufacturing

Quantity

One label per carton — high volume in fulfillment operations

Compare vs Compare

Pallet Labels

Applied to

Full pallets containing multiple cartons or units

Tracks

The entire pallet as a single handling unit through the WMS

Typical size

Larger format — visible from distance on a pallet

Used in

Receiving, storage, bulk picking, outbound shipping

Quantity

One label per pallet — lower volume than carton labels

Need both? Many operations use carton labels and pallet labels together — carton labels tracking individual cases, pallet labels tracking the consolidated load. LabelData produces both. Mention both in your quote request and we will provide pricing for each.

Common Questions

Frequently asked about carton labels.

What is a carton label used for?

A carton label is a barcode label applied to an individual case, box, or carton to identify and track its contents through a pick, pack, and ship workflow. Once applied, the label’s barcode is scanned at each stage — picking, packing, staging, and delivery — to update the WMS and confirm the carton’s status and location throughout the fulfillment process.

Carton labels are applied to individual cases or boxes, tracking a single carton’s contents and journey. Pallet labels are applied to full pallets containing multiple cartons, tracking the entire pallet as a single handling unit. Many operations use both — carton labels for individual case tracking and pallet labels for consolidated load tracking. We produce both and can quote them together.
