Tote Labels
for every container
in your operation.

Custom barcode labels for plastic totes, reusable containers, and storage bins. Sequential LPN labels for WMS-tracked tote systems or fixed ID labels for permanent container identification — printed from your data file.

Two Types of Tote Labels

The right label depends on how your WMS tracks the tote.

Totes are used in two fundamentally different ways in warehouse operations. Some totes are tracked as unique units through a WMS — each one has its own sequential LPN that the system uses to know what is inside and where it is going. Other totes are fixed assets with permanent IDs — the tote is always Tote 001, and what changes is what gets put into it at each cycle.

Sequential LPN tote labels are used when the tote itself needs to be tracked as a shipment or pick unit. The label is applied at the start of a workflow and the WMS follows that specific tote through receiving, picking, packing, and shipping. LabelData has been producing sequential LPN labels since 1993 — a core specialty.

Fixed ID tote labels are used when the tote is a reusable asset that always carries the same identifier. The WMS uses the tote’s fixed ID to track what goes into it at each cycle, not the tote itself. These labels need to survive repeated use, washing, and handling — material choice matters.

How Tote Labels Work in the Warehouse

The label follows the tote through every step.

For WMS-tracked tote operations, the barcode on the label is the tote’s identity at every scan point. The label needs to be readable at every step — from the start of the pick to the outbound dock.

01
Label Applied
Tote label scanned to open tote in WMS and begin tracking
02
Picking
Tote scanned at each pick location — contents recorded in WMS
03
Packing / Staging
Tote scanned to confirm contents before sealing or staging
04
Outbound Scan
Final scan at outbound dock closes tote in WMS
05
Return / Reuse
Tote returned — label remains or is replaced for next cycle

Reusable tote fleets: If your totes cycle back through the facility and get relabeled each time, sequential LPN labels on thermal transfer paper are the right choice. If the tote always keeps the same ID across multiple cycles, a more durable material — polyester or polypropylene — may be a better long-term fit. Tell us how your totes are used and we will advise on the right material.

Applications

Where tote labels get used.

WMS Pick Totes

Sequential LPN labels on pick totes for WMS-directed order fulfillment. Each tote is a unique unit tracked from the start of the pick to the packing station and outbound dock.

Storage & Zone Containers

Fixed ID labels on storage totes, zone containers, and reusable plastic bins used for inventory storage, replenishment staging, and product holding areas.

Returns Processing

Tote labels for returns receiving and processing workflows — each returns tote labeled and tracked through inspection, sorting, restocking, or disposal.

Cross-Dock Tote Tracking

LPN labels on totes used in cross-dock operations — applied at inbound, scanned through the sort, and confirmed at outbound loading to close the cross-dock event.

Manufacturing WIP Containers

Labels on work-in-process containers moving through production stages — each tote or bin tracked from component staging through assembly and quality inspection.

3PL Tote Fleets

Tote label programs for third-party logistics operations managing large fleets of reusable totes across multiple client programs — each tote labeled for fleet tracking and client allocation.

Common Questions

Frequently asked about tote labels.

LPN (License Plate Number) tote labels give each tote a unique sequential identifier that the WMS uses to track what is in that specific tote and where it is going. Each tote in a shipment gets its own unique LPN. Fixed ID tote labels give a tote a permanent identifier that stays the same across every use cycle — the tote is always Tote 001, and the WMS tracks what goes into it each time rather than tracking the tote itself as a shipment unit. If your WMS opens and closes totes as individual units, you need LPN labels. If your totes are fixed fleet assets that get reused with different contents each cycle, fixed ID labels are the right choice.

Yes. We offer permanent high-tack adhesive options specifically suited for plastic tote surfaces, which can be more challenging to adhere to than corrugated cardboard or metal. Tell us your tote material when you submit your quote and we will confirm the right adhesive for your surface type. For reusable totes that get washed or cleaned between cycles, mention that as well — it affects both material and adhesive selection.

Yes. We carry white and popular pastel colors for tote label applications. Color coding is commonly used to differentiate tote programs by zone, product category, customer, or workflow — for example, yellow for returns, blue for standard picks, and green for priority orders. Tell us your color requirements in the quote form.

Yes. Free sequence database maintenance is included with every sequential LPN tote label order. We track your sequence so reorders always pick up exactly where the last batch ended — no duplicate tote IDs, no manual spreadsheet handoff between orders.

Popular sizes include 4″×2″, 4″×6″, and 3″×1″. Custom sizes are available for totes with specific label placement areas or surface dimensions. Tell us your label size requirement in the quote form and we will confirm availability.
