Paper is the most widely used facestock in thermal label printing, and for good reason. It is cost-effective, prints cleanly, and performs well across a broad range of warehouse, retail, and distribution applications. However, not all paper labels are the same. The two primary types serve different purposes, and choosing the right one can impact print life, cost, and label durability.
Direct thermal paper labels use a heat-sensitive coating that produces an image when it passes through the printhead. No ribbon is required, which reduces supply costs and simplifies printer setup. The topcoated surface resists light moisture and smudging, delivering sharp barcodes and readable text for short-term applications.
Best suited for: shipping labels, pick tickets, receiving labels, and any label with a service life of a few weeks to a few months.
Thermal transfer paper labels require a ribbon (wax, wax-resin, or resin) to transfer the image onto the label surface. This process produces a more durable print that resists abrasion, heat, moisture, and UV exposure far longer than direct thermal output.
Best suited for: product identification, work-in-process tracking, compliance labeling, and applications where the label must remain legible for months or years.
Our paper labels are available in sizes ranging from compact formats like 2×1 up to large-format options like 4×8. Standard 1-inch and 0.75-inch cores are in stock and compatible with most industrial, desktop, and mobile printers. Labels are supplied on rolls with consistent counts per roll and per carton for reliable supply planning.
